Piet Wijn Biografy - Jan-Willem de Vries

A biography of Piet Wijn was recently published. Because most of Piet Wijn's life took place behind or above the drawing board, the book has necessarily remained relatively thin.

Following his very detailed description of the history of Toonder Studios, Jan-Willem de Vries set about describing the life of Piet Wijn, one of Toonder's most important mainstays. Piet Wijn began as an assistant at Toonder Studios as early as 1947, making realistically drawn comics like Aram for many years, until he took over as cartoonist in 1959 with the daytime strip King Hollowwin. Between 1960 and 1963 he also worked on Kappie, which he drew from 1969, and Panda was added from 1970.

When in 1971 the Hollewijnstrip was forced to stop, Wijn was asked to do the sketches for Toonder's daily strip of Tom Poes and Mr. Bommel, which he would continue to do until the end of this strip in 1986. While his contributions to Toonder comics were still anonymous, Wijn gained some notoriety in the mid-1970s thanks to the success of his new strip Douwe Dabbert.
