✔Douwe Dabbert and
Paulus de Boskabouter 2020,
Publisher Barabas, uncolored, made paper, 29.6 cm x 42.0 cm
✔In recent years, the Bouterbode has more than once mentioned the drawing Jean Dulieu & Piet Wijn made together in 1976 for the magazine Striprofiel, showing a meeting between their heroes Paulus and Douwe Dabbert. In the background, the hand-shaking gnome-men were spied upon by the witch Eucalypta.
✔At graphic fairs, Henk Braaksma of the Roneo company used the drawing to convince his audience of their high quality stencil equipment. Many left the fair with in their bags a version of Pau & Dou colored in red and green. Printed in three stencil runs, but the owl had flown and the pine had been cut down.
✔In 1990 the double print was given another chance when it was placed on the opening page of the Douwe Dabbert album Het bedrog van Balthasar. The owl was back again, but now there was no room for Eucalypta in this setting and so she was cut rücksichloss from the drawing.
It was Gerben Valkema who captured a new meeting between Paulus & Douwe in a fan drawing for collector Edgar Achterberg. The 1976 original served as an example, but once again the witch was not welcome. She was replaced for this occasion by another spying twosome: Heer Bommel and Tom Poes. On the tree branches behind Douwe Dabbert some acorn men were added in this version.
✔A few times a year, De Werg Comics in Alkmaar publishes a so-called promo print. This spring they enlisted the help of Danker Jan Oreel, who combined his own comic book heroes with the De Werg dwarf for this special occasion.
"Because De Werg's logo is a gnome," the comic book creator explained to us, "they asked me to somehow feature it. Then I thought it might be fun to do that with a few fellow comic book gnomes. Hence Paul. And Douwe.
Thus an idea for a fun comic book cover grew into a gnome friendship that has continued for almost half a century!
